- Bin signage and bin locations were assessed
- Identify source of contamination issues with food and beverage staff
Outcome

The above graph outlines the recycled and landfill percentages after implementing a Galloway Recycling Program
13 % Landfill
87 % Recyclable
Waste streams
Organic waste
Paper, Cardboard ,Newsprint and paper towel
Commingled - Glass , Plastic and Aluminium, Metal cans
Non recyclable - small fraction
Result
- A recycling program that increased recycling at the source would reduce waste disposal costs by 20 %
- After conducting a thorough site assessment Galloway introduced a rubbish compaction system for cardboard that reduced labour costs and increased floor space - A static compaction system with 8m³ hook lift bin was assigned to the site
- New compaction system reduced the quantity of bins in the basement by 40 x 240 L and decreased labour hours used to flatten boxes
- Contamination issues were identified through poor management of food and beverage staff , and an education program and clear bin signage was implemented to ensure the correct waste was being put into the correct bins
- Recovery rates for various waste streams were recovered at 87% in the new recycling program and only 13 % non recyclable / non re-usable - A great achievement !
- Recycling potential for E-waste / Toner cartridges / Fluorescent bulbs and Newspapers left in the rooms identified and bins and recycling vessels assigned
- Waste minimisation and reduction action plan was put in place as a continuous maintenance and waste management program
- White paper recycling bins or paper under desk boxes assigned to hotel departments generating large volumes of white paper to ensure maximum recovery from these waste streams
